Learn how to change a colour and have it update all of the artwork by using global swatches. Details below...

By default, when a swatch is used to colour an object, no link is created between that object and the swatch. Therefore, should an update be made to that swatch, no change will be made to any object that was coloured with that swatch.

To create a link between a swatch and any object that uses that colour, the swatch must first be turned into a global colour. This can be done by double clicking on the swatch and activating the Global option within the Swatch Options dialog box. Illustrator marks global swatches within the Swatches panel with a white triangle in the bottom right corner.

To simultaneously make numerous swatches global colours, they must be selected within the Swatches panel. The Command/Control key allows for discontiguous selections to be made while the Shift key allows for contiguous selections. With multiple swatches selected, press the Swatch Options dialog box at the base of the Swatches panel and activate the Global check box.
