As the Chevrolet Malibu makes its last appearance, we look back nostalgically on the mid-size family sedan's 60-year existence. Taking its name from the beach town that sounds amazing when paired with a coastal Boys song, the Malibu had a good run. As it nears its last year of manufacturing, the 2025 Malibu's only available powertrain option is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to a continuously variable transmission. The automobile accelerates smoothly and gradually once it is moving, though not very swiftly. For example, the Toyota Camry, with its standard front- or all-wheel drive and swift hybrid engine, outperforms the Malibu.
The Malibu, in contrast to many other family sedans, has just one motor option: a solid 1.5-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that generates 160 horsepower and uses a CVT to drive the front wheels. Despite not being a luxury vehicle, the Malibu offers above-average comfort and ride quality for this class of vehicle. All of the Malibu models we looked at impressed us with their responsive handling; they easily passed for sports cars thanks to their carefully adjusted suspension, which was neither too soft nor too tight.
We tested a 2019 Malibu, and on average, it reached 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. In our acceleration testing, this combo did not perform as well as similar competitors. The Hyundai Sonata N Line and the Kia K5 GT, both of which feature 290 horsepower engines that can propel them to 60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds, may be of interest to families looking for a speed demon.
The Malibu's single engine performs lower than the Toyota Camry and Accord's base powertrains in terms of EPA fuel-mileage estimates. It is anticipated that the Chevy will get 30 total mpg. Despite this, the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine came in 34 mpg at 75 mph in our highway fuel-economy test, which was excellent.
The Malibu's cabin isn't the quietest or most opulent, but it is ergonomically well-designed and enjoyable. Although the interior offers similar comfort and capacity for passengers, most competitive choices have better visibility outside.
