This was great! Could you make this a series of pros and cons/ how to work around the cons for all the commonly cut gems? I know all your videos have this interspersed but an educational series specific to the quirks would be interesting.

Very informative video Vintage Time! I frequently mine at Topaz Mountain UT, and the mine owner told me the best faceting plane is 6 degrees off center. Apparently that gets the best flash. :)

Love that cut . I’ve seen it before on other gems and it seems to lighten up the gem immensely. 👍

very informative! I see so many online offers of coloured gemstones at ridiculously low prices which even makes me wonder why mine the stones in the first place...Its all junk and glass!

That was a nice big chunk of Topaz that was cleaved with the hammer and chisel. I'd be happy with the slice he cleaved off ! 😁
I love cutting Topaz. I have not experienced any issues with Topaz cleavage as of yet. I have 200 grams of Light Green and Light Coffee coloured Topaz to facet. A few nice, big pieces too.
I purchased some of that Hydrothermal Topaz (which I expect is Lab-made Quartz) when I first started faceting. By now I have a Dozen FAKE Gem Lab certificates (plastic card w/photo).
Luckily, Topaz is still reasonably priced compared to the vast majority of Facet Rough (other Minerals). The 200 grams I got ended up around $3 Canadian per gram which isn't terrible.
Keep up the excellent work Cliff. I always enjoy your videos which helped me immensely when I first started faceting in Dec. 2019. I recently registered a new business with hope of marketing my gems to at least offset some of the expense of faceting.
Best wishes to you and yours for the new year Cliff. And of course to your dog was well.

Very nice! I like the star effect that frosted facets give it.

Happy New Year Cliff. I use a lot of white topaz as accent stones. I've only used it once as a focal on a pair of earrings. I will agree on the lack of quality stones out there both cut and rough.

Very cool! It’s always nice when people share their passions and present it so informatively. If you read comments—Do you have any insight on the Topaz out of Utah? There is a high concentration of very clear topaz crystals in the west desert and I’m wondering if you’ve come across any, and how well does it facet, what’s you take on the purity of that locality? 😊

The frosted edges do add interest to the stone. The great thing about topaz is you can afford to experiment with design.

I don’t understand the cleavage thing. Can you please do another video specifically with more details about cleavage and the degrees, how to cut the topaz and where I have to start?
A little frustrating for me because I don’t get it 😢.
Thank you for your wonderful channel. I’m expecting my V5 and I have a long way to go.
Thanks again !
