I like how they brought this up again on the Grand Tour, and actually had some footage of a Porsche doing it in situations (at the drive through, at a zebra crossing) to properly illustrate it.

They also explained on TGT (which they didn’t here) that the Launch Control will only be ready for four seconds before it disengages so you can’t even use it on a track or drag strip because you don’t know when light will go green.

I can confirm he is correct. I had a buick lesabre with a bad alternator so every time I came to a red light I had to keep one foot on the brake and the other revving the engine or else the car would die. The angry looks I got made me feel like such an a-hole.

Launch control was invented to get the best 0-60 time possible. This is how most autos are judged especially sports cars. I had it on my last BMW and never used it. Thought about using it the day I sold the car but I didn't want to break anything.

I have 2015 911 GT3 RS. I have used launch control as a way of mitigating human traffic from walking in front of my vehicle when stuck in the city where people just keep walking out in front of you. So when you light up that flat 6 and it just starts popping and cracking and is hitting 110 decibels inside of a city people tend to move out of the way and it's quite quick actually. Comically my wife hated the car until the first night when we went out on a dinner date in it 8 years ago and I finally just got fed up and started engaging launch control then she started laughing hysterically. The only issue is she now doesn't like to go anywhere in my 16 VIP ACR which by the way if it had better acceleration would probably be one of the greatest cars ever made that thing sticks to the road like you wouldn't imagine butt is one of the worst rides if you are just casually driving around specially on slightly bumpy roads and it's horrible on highways that are not flat or smooth.
