What Hart said was not only inaccurate, but it was perpetuating a harmful stereotype that Black people aren’t smart enough to get themselves out of poverty. Systemic oppression plays a significant role in these impoverished Black (and Brown) communities. Things like redlining contribute to communities being food deserts, banking deserts, high crime, and low income. Then they flood these communities with liquor stores to keep us “happy” and check cashing places that offer loans with astronomical interest rates to give us faster access to that money to turn around and spend on those vices. It's so much more at play than just, “black people aren't smart enough” to get themselves out of poverty.
