Born in 1913, Benjamin Britton is an English composer, conductor, and pianist. Britten is known to have liked the works of Baroque composers such as Bach and Percell over the classical sonata form of the 19th century accumulated by Beethoven and Brahms. His Baroque approach can be seen in the form of a suite in his sonata.

The special friendship between Britten and the cellist Rostropovich is widely known. Britten was fascinated by his performance on the European premiere of Shostakovich Cello Concerto no. 1, performed by Rostropovich, and composed and dedicated a collection of cello sonata, cello concerto, and unaccompanied cello suite for him.

Britten Cello Suite no.1 begins with Cantoprimo, which means the first song. Considering Britten's 10-year period of focusing only on vocal music, this song seems to alternately show the song part written Canto-the vocal part-the historical and instrumental movements. Four songs (Canto) are located in the middle of the song with different atmospheres. In the meantime, There are fun from various techniques by showing movements using unique techniques such as pizzicato, harmonics, and cog legno that string instruments can produce. Through this song, I hope that the cello's tone, which is played in an experimental technique, will be well conveyed and that the audience will feel fresh fun together.

1913년에 태어난 벤자민 브리튼은 영국의 작곡가 겸 지휘자이자 피아니스트이다. 브리튼은 베토벤과 브람스가 쌓아올린 19세기 고전 소나타 형식보다 바흐나 퍼셀 같은 바로크 작곡가의 작품을 좋아했다고 알려져 있다. 그의 바로크적 접근은 그의 소나타에서 모음곡 형식으로 나타난 것을 볼 수 있다. 브리튼과 첼리스트 로스트로포비치의 각별한 우정은 널리 알려져 있다. 브리튼은 로스트로포비치가 연주한 쇼스타코비치 첼로 교향곡 1번의 유럽 초연무대에서 그의 연주에 매료되어 그를 위해 첼로 소나타, 첼로 교향곡 그리고 무반주 첼로 모음곡을 작곡하고 그에게 헌정하였다. 이에 로스트로포비치는 "브리튼과 연주하지 않으면 아무 의미가 없다"며 브리튼을 존중하고 존경하였다.

무반주 첼로 모음곡 1번은 첫번째 노래라는 뜻의 Canto primo로 시작한다. 브리튼이 성악음악에만 몰두한 10년의 기간을 생각해보면 이 곡은 Canto라고 쓰인 노래부분 -성악적인 부분- 과 기악적인 악장을 번갈아 보여주는 듯 하다. 네 번에 걸친 노래 (Canto)가 각각 다른 분위기로 곡 중간중간 자리잡고 있다. 그 사이사이에는 현악기가 낼 수 있는 피치카토, 하모닉스, 콜레뇨 같은 독특한 기법을 활용한 악장을 보여줌으로써 다양한 기교에서 나오는 음색과 재미를 느낄 수 있다. 이 곡을 통해 실험적인 주법으로 연주되는 첼로의 음색이 잘 전달되고 관객들도 함께 신선한 재미를 느끼기를 기원해본다.
