Jack Cowley, M.D., is a 91-year-old retired ophthalmologist and cattle rancher from Siskiyou County. He founded Cowley Ranch more than 50 years ago and credits the success of his operation to his cooperation with the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), part of the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR). We traveled to Siskiyou County to chat with Jack and his son & ranching partner David, as well as take a look at his operation for ourselves. We also spoke with UC Cooperative Extension Specialist at the UC Davis Department of Animal Sciences, Alison van Eenennaam, Ph.D., who spent over 20 years working with the Cowleys to develop methods for doing genetic tests on cattle; methods which have since been adopted by the beef and dairy industries worldwide.
