in antiquity the silver solder contain copper and lead, however in midle ages the lead was changed by zinc, and that is more eficient and use today, thats a good way to avoid the cadmium solders that are very toxic .

Well that is safer than the cadmium type you made a while back. Good and low toxicity to you when you melt.

I am ring maker of jewellery in India.. And i used to buy raw zinc rod which is available in market... You extract it from battery.. Why brother you don't want to use a market raw zinc rod or.. It is not available...i called it (Jasta Or kedium)

I think you can make hard and medium solder from sterling, brass and copper only. No need for pure zink.

BTW Alkaline batteries DO contain zink so you do not need old batteries for for this.

I found these:

HARD 740-787c
75% FINE SILVER, 22% PURE COPPER, 3% ZINC

MEDIUM 690-737C
70% FINE SILVER, 20% PURE COPPER, 10% ZINC

EASY 670-718C
65% FINE SILVER, 20% COPPER, 15% ZINC

EXTRA EASY 630-660C
FINE SILVER 55%, 22% ZINC, 21% PURE COPPER, 2% TIN

Note: brass can vary with zink content, so I recomend know sources.

Sterling is 92.5% Ag 7.5%Cu.
