I don’t think ppl understand the true power of this beautiful scene. Navratri wasn’t celebrated on Kamathipura before because the women didn’t think of themselves worthy to celebrate their culture or even practice their beliefs. This scene shows how much Ghangubai has empowered women in the community. They are the backbone of India. Like a coven praying to their deity. You can feel the passion, the fierceness, the confidence in these 4, 000 women.

This is one powerful scene. So many things in one scene. The song and the instrumentals is phenomenal, first of all. But this scene. I interpreted this scene as Ganga and Gangu meeting in the middle. The only time it happened in the entire film. She said in the beginning of her journey that she had killed Ganga to be able to survive the new path she's in. But hearing her mother's voice, the vulnerability she did not let anyone see in her after renaming herself as Gangu, she was able to let it all go when she proclaimed in that short call how much she longed for her mother's love; not only that but finding out that her father passed and she had no idea. Finally, she was able to do this dance after 12 years, the last time being the night before she was brought to Kamathipura. She is Gangubai but she is also Ganga in this scene. The vulnerable soft girl in her came out also while being their Madam, whose purpose is to fight for all these women that is around her. The pain of knowing that your old self is mourning, but having a responsibility in front of you, Alia truly and definitely embodied that. Her body language and the way she danced pouring every emotion in her, and dancing in the vulnerability. This is powerful yet so sad.

I cannot believe Alia. She portrayed the emotions very well, and she IS Gangubai. I am SO proud.

1:49 onwards brings tears to my eyes every time. Those of us who believe in the Female Divine can feel adrenaline running through our veins once we hear different names of Ambe Rani. This piece holds so much importance because Navratri is the largest festoval pan India that celebrates womanhood. It is also believed that Goddess Amba herself descends down to Earth to dance Garba with us. These 'outcast' 4000 sex-workers never celebrated Navratri coz they/society considered them 'impure', not worthy to be called (dignified) women in a civil society. For the first time they celebrated womanhood. For the first time, they dressed up and put make-up to celebrate them being women, not to attract clients. BIG DEAL. All thanks to Gangubai.

That solo part of Alia while blowing sindoor in the air... Just amazing... I can feel the pain, the anger in those spins.. It hits the heart deep inside..Not a fan of Alia.. But as far as I hv studied about the personality Gangubai.. I felt that Alia has done much justice with the character... She has came out of her actual personality.. In fact Alia has grown her acting skills very much in Raazi, Gangubai Kathiawadi.. Both the movies will make a mark in her acting life.

The most difficult rasa (emotion) out of the navrasas to express in dance is Raudra (rage). That is why Rudra Tandav and Kalika Tandav is the most difficult dance form to perform. When you are angry, your muscles contract. The physical movement becomes restrained, muscles become sore, more pain and ofc you spend more energy.
