Can you make a metal fishing lure with a 3D printer?

Using 3d printer to make fishing lures is nothing new, people have been messing around with this at least on youtube for over a decade, so I have really turned up late to the party.
Last year on finding myself having moved and without a workshop, just as the Lockdowns began I started messing around with CAD software and 3D printers really for a bit of fun and also because a3d printer really can be a workshop on its own albeit with limitations. That main limitation is time, it takes forever to print most things, and with larger lures I could probably make the lures in wood by hand a lot faster. But for making masters and then taking moulds from them you can really speed up the production part. Using cad software to design lures is something industry has been doing for a very long time, designs can be quite easily tuned into instructions for cnc machines and other industrial processes.

Is cad and 3d printing the best way to make lures at home? I don’t think it is, I think it is down to whatever you enjoy and although this an amazing tool so is a Stanley 99e.

CAD Software

Fusion 360, This is available free as an individual for non commercial use with some limitations namely the amount of projects you can have open at one time. It is cloud based and needs an internet connection for a lot of functions. I really didn’t find it easy to learn how to use this software and had to follow along with alot of youtube tutorial videos on the subject which really helped. It took me a couple of months doing 1 hour practice sessions daily to get to some level of confidence. The software allows for vast possibilities and really I have only just scratched the surface here.

I am not CAD expert but there are alternatives available.

3d Printer setup

Slicing software : Citubox which generally comes free with the printer

Cost £180 when purchased in June 2021 price has since come down by around 10%

resin : Elegoo water washable either from Elegoo or Amazon
£27 per 500g 06/06/2021
How much you use depends on the volume of your print. The mould box print was 32g and if I round this up 40g for wastage I get about £2.20 cost for the print.

Curing station: Sunlu 3d curing station Amazon
£40 06/06/2021

Mould making

Silicone: Polycraft HT 3120 High Temperature RTV Silicone
Cost £30 for 550g kit plus £8 P+P 10/10/2021
I used 61 grams for the moulds giving a cost of £4.50

This product can be bought from alternative suppliers, and also other silicone manufacturers

Mould Hardware

Large pins 2mm x 12mm roller bearings this was from a selection box bought from ebay but cut down nails would have worked as well.

Small mould pins where made from .8mm s/steel Mig welding wire

Locating ball bearing 5mm bought online

Lure Hardware

Through wire was made from .8mm S/steel Mig welding wire bought from a tool shop

Hooks: DONQL size 12 treble bought from amazon

Ball bearing swivels size 2 bought fromebay/amazon

SIze 2 nickel plated brass colorado blades, bought online a few years back

5mm S/steel split ting

4mm self adhesive domed 3d eyes amazon/ebay

Lead Free Pewter, £35 per kg bought as scrap 06/06/21, each lure weights 10g so approx cots £00.35 per lure

I remember when I bought my first pack of Sculpey clay to replicate your sand eel lure back when I was in elementary and now I’m in my senior years of college. You Paul Adams are an inspiration
