I knew an old hand in Kansas. He had a J series D2. Said it was the toughest little dozer. Watching this is so enjoyable.

From one mechanic and antique farm equipment fan to another, it'd be an honor to spend a weekend there turning wrenches on that old equipment. That is what I would consider a vacation.

I’m 86 got into Operating Engineers 1951 Cleveland Ohio . Have been machine operator, mechanic.master mechanic !
Had a D-4 pipe layer froze to the ground .broke both final drives when they started it & tried to move it . Co I was working for bought it for scrap.
I took the side boom off . Took the winch off the back took both track frames off . Took both final drives apart .
The dead shafts on both sides had broken the housing , split it about 3/4 of an inch . We had a 900 amp AOSMITH welder , used carbon arc, Vd out the housing on both sides clear to the dead shaft jacked on the bottom of the housing, dead shafts located every thing welded it to tether with my new Miller welder using LH 110 painted it, spray cans, cat yellow put it all back together .except for side boom . Ran it for 2 years no problem sold it

Keep the 5J videos coming. Being a new CAT D2 5j owner they are very educational.

Viewing this 5 years late. It is interesting to see how this parts unit turned into a major project. I enjoyed seeing the Super M before restoration and the Minneapolis Moline sweatshirt. I have one too!

Wow that block is all done. That's just a shame. Don't believe I've seen one that bad before. Thanks for your efforts. !!!!

Watching closely. Really like the full story, from dragging it home, to tearing it down, and hopefully someday to watch you repair/rebuild an engine for it. Looking forward to the day it moves under it's own power again.

An other time had D-6 we borrowed , winter time, started leaking 90 weight, trans oil .Machhine belonged to Blackie Joesph, . Now if your old enough &from Cleveland you know you didn’t mess with him . Pulled the machine into garage, pulled transmission . Had a hole 4 inches sq covered with black magic!!! Steamed it off had an old truck transmission. Broke it up made a piece that fit the hole heated the trans just warm to the touch welded it with ny rod, about an inch at a time and beat hell out of it with air chisel worked good . PUT MACHINE back to work Blackie never knew

I love these old CATs. There's nothing quite like them anymore. That's a crying shame, at least for me.

I just subscribed because 1) your videos are well-edited (i.e., brief and interesting), 2) no music...thank you!, and 3) you don't post that often and I don't want to miss a video! Great work, keep it up!

Like the way you use bolted on lifting brackets, safe and secure. Unlike some others on Y/T.

Great content. I particularly enjoy the way you edit and narrate. You say and show just enough to keep it interesting. Many Youtubers don't get this. If you don't produce video for a living, then this is most impressive indeed.

Wow 5 minutes to break down and remove that engine, well done. All kidding aside always great to see you and dad working together on something. I think Tap's playing in the background for that block would be fitting. Thanks for sharing.

Just like a song or a smell can transport you back to childhood, so can the sound of an M Farmall.
