September 24, 1932: Poona Pact was Signed between Mahatma Gandhi & BR Ambedkar | Firstpost Rewind

On this day in 1932, BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi agreed upon the Poona Pact. They had sparred over the allocation of separate electorates for dalits. Ambedkar was in favour of it but Gandhi thought it would divide the society. So, the two leaders reached an agreement. The Poona Pact scrapped the idea of separate electorates for dalits. But it increased the number of reserved seats for them. This further shaped India's electoral system in the years to come.

Gandhiji was perhaps subconsciously most fearful of the muslims.  Perhaps The fear of the violent nature of the muslims weighing heavy on the docile and caste fragmented Hindus possibly prompted him to go all out for Muslim appeasement. taking its root from 1919, when he supported the Khilafat Movement to protest against the breakup of Ottoman (Turkish) empire by the British and humiliation caused to Turkish Caliph who was also the head of the Muslims of the whole world. ... In this movement, Gandhiji extended the support of Congress towards the Muslims. Perhaps His ambition to be the undisputed leader of India, hoping he would be able to correct everything in the end, carried his actions.

By putting the onus of this elusive unity literally only on the Hindus, Gandhiji told the Hindus that it was their national duty, essentially, to be killed, tortured, raped and humiliated with a smile on their face in the aftermath of the moplah massacre.
This is what was preached to us in a critical moment by the state machinery that obviously took sides for the sake of appeasement.

Possibly the unforeseen twist that resulted was, prompted by Gandhi's stand on muslims, Ambedkar took the dalit issue to the British and made a deal.

Though Gandhi opposed special safeguards and separate electorates (Communal Award) for Muslims and Dalits, the case of the latter was unacceptable to him, prompting him even to resort to a fast unto death. He believed that separate electorates would do more harm to the Dalits, which was true enough.

But the dalit as a powerful political force was rightly and firmly casted by then, into Indian politics.

Later in 1940s consequently, the Congress leading to accepting the 10 year grace period for dalit reservations in the constitution of India.

The American slavery model had been executed to perfection by the British early and ambedkar had set his mind to free the dalits of the social bonds. Gandhi did try vehemently to unite all the Hindus as one, pleading to leave aside social caste differences.

But India's gloom & doom had already been cemented even in the social sector. Possibly The rot had its roots from there. Gandhi perhaps, had poor or no vision how the lopsided appeasements, would affect the vast hindu majority.

The Gandhi-ambedkar tug of war, rightly still needs to focus on the unattended urgent concern that is misused by the vested politicos. It has ignited a spark of hope after centuries of suppression for the dalits, which surely needs to be doused rationally.
