Quora has been used to as a Chinese government PSYOP, and no one seemed to notice. This is a horrible influence operation that is basically war without the guns.

I have been on Quora for years complaining that is a Wumao breeding ground... They have hundreds of profiles with Western male names and profile pictures but are clearly Chinese Wumao... And whenever I try to argue against it my comment gets deleted by moderators...I even wondered if Quora was owned indirectly by Chinese entities because of the Chinese bias the moderators seem to show... It's so annoying how these ppl with no free speech or free expression come onto Western platforms and use the free speech provided by that to rail against the west... It's so pathetic

I was a Quora power user from 2017 to 2020. In 2020 I moved to Hawaii for a few months and I kind of just realized that Quora was adding more stress to my day than anything else. Comments sections were often just Twitter flame wars in long form. I do remember 2020 however suddenly feeling like a massive wave of wumao coming in out of nowhere arguing endlessly on anything related to covid. It was one of the reasons I left the platform, since 20 comment chains of back and forth began to feel less like I was fighting propaganda misinformation and more like I was pouring gasoline on the fire and giving them a chance to validate false narratives in the eyes of casual onlookers. When you're 60 paragraphs into an argument, no casual onlooker is still reading and their primary takeaway is not that you've rebuffed every piece of misinformation, but is rather that after 60 paragraphs there's still debate so it must be an equally valid alternative narrative.

Russia made heavy use of Quora too. Right before the war, I was getting a lot of positive posts about Russia from some very biased writers. I mean it was weirding me out because I wasn't even following these posters but they kept appearing in my feed at high volume. I was getting close to quitting Quora until the war unexpectedly broke out. I then realized Why there was such an uptick in Russian propaganda on there. The propaganda has dropped off considerably since then and now I mainly see pro-Ukraine/Russia sucks posts.
