Jesus vs Paul: The Origins of a Religious Schism in Early Christianity | Dr. Bart D. Ehrman

Sign up for Dr. Bart Ehrman’s Course, “Paul and Jesus: The Great Divide” - -

This course addresses one of the most controversial issues of early Christianity: Did Paul and Jesus have the same religion? Should they be considered the “co-founders” of Christianity? Or were the teachings of Paul at odds with the proclamations of Jesus, making Paul himself the founder of the new faith? Few questions can be more significant for understanding the origin of the Christian faith, and the answers are by no means simple.

When I was a church goer, there were sermons that at the time I thought were life-changing. I remember some of some of those, but very little, and I would be hard pressed to write down many of the actual words that were spoken. I can only imagine the confusion and error that would have been at play in the writing of the gospels a generation or more after the events.

The show that broke my mind was Brain Games. These people in the game shows that your memory starts failing immediately after you have experience what happened. Now, trie to recall what you did 20 years ago. We know the writings of this Jesus was around 40 to 80 years after. It’s just absurd to believe in any of it even if they were spreading rumors of rumors and memorizing the rumors.

Some believe there is only one way and tell you they are the gate keepers, self appointed, I hate when damnation is used to keep people in fear and obedient .

Hi. It's impossible to requite Paul's comment "No-one can say 'Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit" ((1Cor 12:3), with Jesus' words condemning those who were using the name of Jesus to work iniquity (Matt 7:21-23). Paul says they can't, Jesus says they can. When the foundations are divided against each other, how can the house remain standing?

3:00 If you're referring to "Jesus before the Gospels", I've read it. It's brilliant.

Weren't the Epistles and the Gospels intended for different audiences? The Epistles are generally both signed and addressed, the Gospels are neither.

The evangelical view that Paul elaborates on Jesus quickly disappears when you study what Jesus actually taught or least what we have from the gospels.

1:53 "there have to be." Source: dude, trust me. I love Bart and James Tabor, but both of them grant WAY too much credibility to the stories they both grew up on.

Hi I have a question on the contrast between Matthew and paul that if people should keep the commandments. People might argue that after the death of jesus. Gentiles don’t need to follow their laws so that the death of Jesus brings our new deals that gentiles doesn’t need to follow the Ten Commandments

People will never understand that God could appear in the heavens this moment with all his Majesty and all would believe!!!! But few would love ❤️. The truth is that devils too believe and tremble. God is not bothered about proud people believing or not. There will never be "proof".... but you all will one day surely close your eyes, all on your own, and you will see your dead body from above before your spirit is carried away to face the truth your now laughing Shalom

Who authorised Paul to perform Baptism?

there are supposed to be contrasts and conflicts between the two ministries of Jesus and Paul because they are teaching 2 different Gospels.

The difference, if at all and regardless of it's significance or lack thereof, between the Jesus of the gospels and Paul, according to Ehrman, seems to be Jesus says learn good be good NOW. Paul says learn good be good "now" AFTER baptism and belief in death/resurrection. He doesn't just think "its good to be good", its a certain *requirement* for Paul, and he thinks one will be empowered to do so after baptism/belief in resurrection.

Ehrman also humbly presents the issue is of what we think Jesus would have made of Paul's understanding. Would he have denounced it, was it a reasonable continuation or one he also would have affirmed, or was it somewhere in the middle where it's not what Jesus said but not uncompatible.

Ehrman and scholarship are asking great questions that some of us as Christians would never even think about or would purposely bury our head in the sand in the face of, but questions we should ask, we may need to ask, and that are actually fun to ask and think through.

Matthew's statement of following the "law" being addressed to Jews turning to Christ as the messiah is a very different case than a Gentile turning to Christ. A jew should still be circumcised and uphold Jewish tradition but a Gentile doesn't have to get That doesn't mean that Paul is at odds with Matthew etc. It's amazing people believe this kind of distortion but it's a great example why God will not reveal himself to you as you have already judged yourself. Repent. Shalom 🧡

That is called a belief.

Jesus said, Blessed are those who have not seen but yet have believed (John 20 :29).

Regarding the theory that you are saved by obeying the commandments like Jesus taught, if you ask "Then why did Jesus have to die?" what if I answer with "He didn't technically have to die. It's just that his death and resurrection prove that he had authority, or knew what he was talking about."? That way, Paul would be wrong AND that question is answered.

it seems like the most obvious argument against Matthew's story about Jesus in the desert is that it is a typical Matthew trick of filling in the blanks left by Mark.

What did Jesus mean saying if you do things you can enter the "kingdom" ? What kingdom is Jesus talking about since I thought Jews didn't believe in afterlife/heaven. I remember Jesus said "The Kingdom is inside you". Can anyone explain this. Dr Bart Erhman is my favorite guest
