Donald Trump’s choice for US defence secretary Pete Hegseth received tense questioning from Democratic senator Tim Kaine over his character and fitness for the presidential cabinet.

Kaine queried Hegseth’s judgement in relation to sexual assault allegations brought by a woman in 2017.
