So, the dot projected cannot be used to determine if a distant point is level with the surface the device is resting on. Seems to me it would be a little more useful if the line or dot projected is level with the bottom of the device?

Husky used to make something similar, but it seems they discontinued it. I grabbed the 24in version for $40 a couple years ago and it had a digital readout too. Function to beep when it hit level as well.

Am I supposed to trust this guy who can't read his own measuring tape? Even if he misread it, to think that's only 5/8ths of an inch thick is baffling me.
