The Pursuer is a dark mirror to the player || Dark Souls 2 Analysis

Whilst I've never played Dark Souls 2, I can see this comparison from seeing his design in various places. Alot of his armor, shield and the way he carries alot of weapons around his back, jumps off a bird like the player in Dark Souls 1, has always given me an impression he's sort of a player character equal or a rival.

The Pursuer even has access to fast-travel mechanics, albeit ones not tied to bonfires.

My favourite thing about the pursuer is that it looks like it's been around for a long time, gathering a stash of weapons for every situation and wrapping them in a bedroll. Also it moves and acts like an absolute badass, possibly the best thing in all of dark souls 2

Talking about similarities, can we talk about the massive amount of weapons on his back that he never uses. Almost like he has an inventory filled to the brim with weapons that do not fit his build.

I like how over the top badass they are. Giant sword, a meter thick shield, overwhelming ammunition on their back, shining red eyes, armor with screaming faces engraved on it, bulky body type (they literally are embodiment of 6 feet height) and like everything above wasn’t enough, they can fly for some reason. It’s like a 11 year old fantasy and I fucking love it

It even wields a greatshield and a greatsword, honoring the time honored tradition of a strength build

The worst part of Dark Souls 2 is the fact we couldn't get the Pursuer's armor. It looks awesome

And worst of all he even does some decidedly un-jolly cooperation in the New Game + version of Drangleic castle where two of these bastards team up to torture the player even more.

The way it floats gives it the impression its some levels above you, but its never that far from the ground, or immune to gravity.

This guy is straight up my favourite boss in the series. Thematically perfect, and it's a big plus that he reminded me so fondly of Nemesis from Resident Evil 3, (the original). I am however adamant that there's only 1 Pursuer, not several. It's much better that way.

I must admit I wish he showed up as a proper boss fight again later on, maybe with a new moveset. Also, I always thought it wasn’t multiple pursuers, but 1 that just kept reappearing, and the two in the ng+ fight was just him using some magic technique. Alternatively, given where you fight him with that?maybe there’s some connection to Vendrick and his Queen?

I love the Pursuer. The one guarding the locked passage to the gargoyles keeps coming back until you defeat him. I had no idea what was past him, but I wanted it. He was the first pursuer I beat on my own and it took a lot of tries, but it was oh so satisfying.

Another simple an effective design trait is that the Pursuer's lit up visor gives the impression that it has one eye. This could double as an evil eye as well as a symbol of one-minded determination, a literal tunnel vision

The Pursuer has always fascinated me even from the first second. The name, the introduction, the omnious floating, the breathtaking charge. The Pursuer is unstoppable determination, to me both a rival and a source of inspiration for willpower. Every encounter with him is as horrifying as it is exciting.
