As some 60 million people in Turkey go to the polls in local elections, one person has been killed and a dozen more injured in clashes between two groups in the country's Kurdish majority southeast. Ballots are being cast in what is being seen as a key test for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's conservative AKP party. In Turkey's biggest city Istanbul, which is governed by the secular opposition, polls suggest a neck-and-neck race.

Erdogan has been authoritarian, but he has always derived his political power from the people through elections. Erdoğan has kept his seat thanks to weak and incompetent opposition parties. In the previous general elections, the opposition made a very wrong choice and nominated the person who was least likely to win against Erdoğan as a presidential candidate (polling companies said Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was the weakest candidate)
In short, Erdoğan was able to win the 2023 general elections in the second round thanks to the personal ambition of the opposition leader in the previous election (Kılıçdaroğlu insisted on being the presidential candidate).
Nonetheless, the Turkish people have always regarded the ballot box as sacred and have participated at high rates. Erdoğan is a politician who knows the Turkish people's sensitivity to the ballot box. He has repeatedly emphasized that he will respect the ballot box. Because the Turkish people have always kept this issue on the agenda "when that day comes (when Erdogan loses the presidential election) if he does not want to hand over the presidential seat to his rival"????
For now, there does not seem to be a problem. It is not very likely anymore.
