The True End of the Targaryen Dynasty | The Storming of the Dragon Pit | House of the Dragon

Spoilers for future seasons of House of the Dragon. We hear a few mentions of the Dance of Dragons throughout A Song of Ice and Fire, about how the Dance was really the beginning of the end for the Targaryns. The Dance itself claimed many of the most prominent dragons in the realm, dragons such as Caraxes, Vahgar and Meleys. A lot had happened over the conflict, Daemon hired blood and cheese to kill Aegon’s first born son, Aemond and Daemon died over the God’s eye, Raynera had taken back the Iron Throne. During her rule the former Queen Haelena threw herself onto iron spikes of Maegor’s Holdfast.

The small folk loved the Helaena and the night of her death was marked with violence across the city. A man called the Shepard led the mob and preached not only against Raynera but the dragons as well. Whipping the small folk into a frenzy, they stormed the dragonpit, overwhelming members of the city watch and eventually the Dragonkeepers. Queen Rayhnera’s son Joffery tried to take his mother’s dragon Syrax to save his own dragon in the dragon pit. Sadly, Syrax bucked Joffery to his death. All of the dragons would die by the hand of the small folk. The last to die was Dreamfyre, who crashed into the dome, bringing it down, killing her attackers and herself.

Syrax went to the aid of her fellow dragons but she was also overwhelmed. This was the most destructive day in the war, with 5 dragons dying in one night, crippling the dynastic power of the Targaryn’s.

Its honestly amazing that this wasn't the end of there dynasty, the whole reason the targaryens ruled were because they had dragons without them westaros had no reason to continue to be loyal to them anymore they could have easily been overthrown after this.

I got to the dragon pit part of the book and I almost quit reading I was so heartbroken mostly for Dreamfyre and Syrax. The sky was hers but she grounded in the pit with her. I’m traumatized by fire and blood can’t wait for season 2 of HOTD. All of the dragons gone except for 3. 😢Sheep Stealer, Silverwing, and Cannibal.

Would really like to see if they decide to expand upon the slight allusion to and the fan theory that the maesters and faith of seven were complicit in the downfall of the Dragon from poisoning eggs to being the ones who started the riot

They should have just made the Dragon Pit a hatchery instead of a dragon stable for ginormous beasts in a city.

But this probably wouldn’t have happened if Jaehaerys or even Viserys was on the throne

Hmmm maybe this is why the writers decided to write in that awful scene (not in the books) where Reneys Bursts through the floor killing bare minimum 100s of innocents. It will make the common folk doing something so brutal to the dragons seem more sympathetic rather then make them come across as bloody thirsty savages.
