On the black market, rhino horns sell for thousands of dollars due to false beliefs about their supposed medicinal benefits. To prevent them from being killed, conservationists have chosen to cut off their horns painlessly, since they are made of keratin, like our nails. Without a horn, rhinos lose value to poachers and have a better chance of surviving in the wild.
