Not all Hungarian units suffered catastrophic losses at the Don, in early 1943, when the Soviet Ostrogozhsk–Rossosh offensive launched. Some of these units were led by determined officers, who did their best to keep the unit intact and survive the collapse together.

First Lieutenant László Bártfai Szabó was one such officer, who later went on to write his memoirs and even publish it before the collapse of the Communist regime. This mini-series tells the story of his unit, the 107th Engineer Company, relying on his own words.
