Hiking Along Old Pacific Coast Highway at the Devil's Slide in Pacifica

The Devils Slide is an awesome coastal biking and hiking trail in Pacifica, CA. The trail was once part of Pacific Coast Highway but it was always being closed due to it being dangerous and the many landslides that happened in the area. After they closed the road to cars, they reopened it to hikers and bikers and it is a fantastic and historic trail along the California Coast. Check out the video and let me know what you think in the comments.

I am a retired Truck Driver. Back in the late 1900's I used to drive my big rig with double trailers over Devil's Slide after delivering apples to Martinelli's Apple Juice Plant in Watsonville, it was such a beautiful drive heading North on Coastal Hwy.1 and 101 back to Sonoma County.

My neck of the woods! We drove along the original Devil's Slide on the very last day you were allowed to do so, good memories for sure. All the times I had driven it before I didn't realize how many bad accidents there apparently were throughout the years. It's great they saved it for pedestrians to enjoy those amazing views!

Yup, I drove this hiway many times in the 70's. Almost lost my life in my car during a cold, dark, rainy night coming home from Colma. Thank goodness for the berms back then. Thanks Caltrans for the tunnels to keep everyone else safe.

What a cool experience to walk on old PCH while taking in those stunning views. So glad to know they kept it around for us to still enjoy now

The old railroad tracks are still below the cliff. There is also a cave at the bottom / beach that looks like a great spot for pirates' treasures.

I was doing my first full PCH road trip, from LA to Victoria BC in 2006, when I came upon the closed section at the Devil's Slide! So I never got to do that stretch. But it was the trip of a lifetime. Thank you for sharing this awesome view with us.

I'm from the UK and have driven that part of the PCH on a couple of occasions on trips, and didn't even know that was there. If I ever get to to it again, that is a stop to add to the list for sure!

Age gives a lot of perspective. My stepdad was born in 1920. I thought he was soooo old. I lived in Pacifica 1963-1967. We took a lot of rides on Hwy 1 and in my mind, as an 8-10 yo, he was blathering on. But there was a part of my mind that paid attention to him. So glad I did. My memories are beautiful.

I definitely had not paid attention to the bypass tunnels being created. Yay for the road being kept and turned into a walking path. Will have to venture out there

There is a couple mile section of US-2 on the north side of Lake Michigan that was rebuilt further inland probably due to worries about beach erosion and the highway road falling down the hill in the U.P.

You can add more to your hike by going up into the hills. The views are worth the effort!

Josh, thanks for posting the video. I just hiked the Devils Slide Trail myself 2 weeks ago. Even though it is short, it is worth walking it, as the views are outstanding. I concur with parking on the south parking lot, as the walk is more scenic, as from the north parking lot the view of the ocean is blocked by a ridge. Note that the walk from the north side is much shorter and must be at a higher elevation, because there doesn't seem to be as much elevation change. The walk coming from the south parking lot is longer and has a 9% grade at the part approaching the high point on the trail.
