I had the same situation: I was still under anaesthetic from having my wisdom teeth out when my girlfriend led me like a dog to the receptionist's desk. "That'll be £80", the receptionist said (it was quite a few years ago). I suddenly came to: "£80? He told me £50" (they'd decided to do all four instead of just the one that was hurting). I wrote a cheque for £80. A couple of months later they wrote asking for extra money. My reply contained the phrase, "Leaving aside for a moment the ethics of asking a patient to write a cheque while still under I didn't hear any more from them. Oh, and nearly laughed my arse off at Peter describing his experience.
