The Ares Control Line Airplane

The Ares....new to me. Bought it from a feller making room for other planes in his basement.
Flies so nice and smooth. Built and flown by Keith Sandberg then sold the sold again and now sold to me.
Powered by a Double Star .40 engine.

Control line models recall events of a lifetime ago.... 60's/70's.... Ares was always in my mind, THE most beautful models available ... I had one. Flew one. They LOOKED a million and flew so perfectly ... always positive ... solid, predictable, and just a sheer joy to watch. I spent 30 years in aviation, following one of the usual career paths. Now in my eighties ... I look back on those years with enormous joy and pleasure ... wouldn't change a thing ... Early on, these models just amplified the basic drive, and the fascination, I've had (and still do!) with things of the air ... Beautiful ships .... the Noblers and Ares ....

For me when the engine is inside the fuselage and there is a tiny pilot the airplane is more aesthetically pleasing.  Nice looking plane!

I really wish you'd put the "likes" bar back.  I'm always looking for it! :)  As a HUGE builder and flyer myself (C/L and R/C from 12" to 60"), I love these videos.

I notice you are left handed. I also used to fly left handed flying 2 1/2 cc Combat and Rat Race. I never competed in stunt as that was for the big boys. Good to see your passion for control line still.

Back in the early 60s I was flying a Junior Ringmaster with a pretty poor Fox .15, then a Senior Ringmaster with an even worse McCoy .35. I remember seeing an ad for the Ares for the first time in M.A.N sometime around 63 (?) and just drooled over it. Thought it was the most gorgeous CL plane I'd ever seen. I think it still might be.

Yo Shug PhillySkip here.That Ares looks great. I happened to pick one up all framed out from a Brodak kit that a fellow didn't want to finish. Boy is that a great looking stunt ship. I'm still flying my ARF Noblers, Finishing a Sig Akrobat and starting an RSM Shark 45. The snow's coming, it's time to build!

Having a goal is great. Don't get me wrong. But always have fun. It should never be work, and should never be disapointing. I have seen C/L flyers get so mad when they do not fly perfect patterns, or crash. You are a good flyer. Just have fun. that's all I am saying.

In the mid 60's, I built an Ares stunt with a Johnson 35 to power it. Flew great, I remember the slightly unusual wing construction

Hi Shug - Getting into the sport/hobby/obsession, myself - that is an excellent copy of the Ares. Kind of Regal in the way an old Lab is. Comfortable it its own skin...  That Ares is setting a high bar, superb color scheme. Flies better 'cause it looks so good. Hoping to drag others into this sport who may have planes collecting dust. Classic / Old Time Stunt is where it is at... Thanks for showing how its done - looking forward to more videos. Don't let snow hold you back.

Shug you don’t do bad flying with the wrong hand! Who needs golf when you have a nice green 6o foot diameter patch of grass to fly off of. Great video.
