The drain plug really ain’t the problem when it comes to making a mess it’s that damn oil filter.

Two problems with this. 1. You risk getting oil all up inside the corrugated hose and you know it's never coming out but always making everything a mess. 2. Now you are not under the car for when you realize you put the drain pan in the wrong spot and now it's got 5-10 seconds of free time to dump everywhere except in the pan. No thanks I'll just wear a glove and be careful.

If you want an actual oil changing tip, on vertical oil filters, using a plastic cup (preferably clear) around the filter, unscrew it. The oil goes into the cup, not down your arm and in your sleeve

Been turning wrenches for 30 years and it has been my experience that guys that can't stand getting a little dirty usually end up doing something else for a living.

I like to use a table saw when rotating my tires. Works
Great!

I did that back in early 90's working at a jiffy lube when customers had drain plug and gasket replacement only requests. The other guys would look at me like I was a wizard or something. The customers looked a little butt hurt when i did it because they assumed I'd have to drain the oil out to do it. Fun times!

This is so much easier than wiping my fingers off with a shop towel.

What works? I dont get what it did. It cant be so you dont get oil on your hand right? Its not difficult to get it on the last thread and pull away upwards and not get a drop on you. People seem to go out their way to make jobs more difficult

If you're afraid of getting a little oil on your hands, you should not be working on a car.

What works? Now you got a vacuum, an oil pan, and the additional mess when you remove the oil filter!
Nice hack!

I thought the shop vac was going to suck all the oil up, at least it prevented your hands from getting oily lol. Seems like more trouble than it’s worth.

We wouldn't have near the mess if the drain plug were on the bottom of the pan instead of on the side.

Next, we will use a sawzall to replace the in cabin air filter.

I’d rather grab a glove than a shop vac.

Everytime I hear that sound... "Reefers"... Sublime still on my playlist

Replacing the drain plug with a FUMOTO drain valve is the best option. You connect a piece of hose to the valve barb and put it directly in a container. No mess.

The devil is in the details. When you pull the plug... generally, you need to make a quick adjustment of the pan to catch the stream of oil. Notice... no oil appeared in the pan. Nice idea, but 98% sure the stream totally missed the pan while he was off messing with the vacuum. Maybe the plug underneath with the pan? Seems like a lot of effort for something that can be solved with a paper towel. Creative 3/10

Believe it or not, we use this exact trick on wind turbines. The gearbox has 115 gallons of oil in it and if we need to change a temp sensor or pressure sensor or something that is below the oil level, and would drain the gearbox if we removed it, we use the shop vac and it will hold the entire 115 gallons of oil for long enough to let us change the part without losing all the oil. It's pretty amazing actually
