I really enjoy Curtis Sittenfeld’s writing. I didn’t start with her first book, Prep. I found her through her book of short stories, You Think It, I’ll Say It and then I read American Wife. The main character is supposedly loosely based on Laura Bush. I just read Romantic Comedy and liked it; I found it quite charming. I now have Prep and Rodham on my shelf and am looking forward to digging in.

Yellow Face, The Ferrymen ( I read the Passage Trilogy and liked it) Greek Lessons ( I’ve read The Vegetarian and loved it ) and Lone Women are a few from the list I have on my radar. I'm not going to put them before the books I already have on my bookshelf or ebook TBR though. I'm glad that you are feeling better and hope you have a wonderful reading month💕

I very much enjoyed Abraham Verghase's first novel Cutting for Stone 15 years ago so I am interested in his new one. I have also also noted down Heart Sutra.

Greek Lessons is really good! At least in my opinion. I thought it was beautifully done.

Some intriguing titles here, Shelly. Thanks for going trough this list. I am overly excited for The Covenant of Water. Verghese's first novel Cutting for Stone got me back into reading and I've been waiting impatiently for this next novel for over 10 years. His writing is beautiful and intricate. I'm thinking you'd like it.

Hey Shelly! I LOVED Biography of X!!! I don't usually read new releases but I knew I had to get my hands on this. I haven't read anything else by Catherine Lacey, but I will definitely go back and read her body of work. Biography of X reminded me of Margaret Atwood's work. It is set in the aftermath of an alternate history of America, which feels eerily familiar. Lacey's writing, world building and characterization is phenomenal!

Hearing you talk about these books is more interesting than just reading the NYT list on my own. A 19th century Sudan setting is a hook for me. So is the descriptor “experimental” — reason? I love novelty in my reading. So it’s enough to make me give it a closer look and maybe pick it up, but I don’t necessarily like everything that’s experimental. A title like Romantic Comedy turns me off — even though I’ve enjoyed Sittenfeld’s short stories in the past — because I’m not a fan of that genre (in books or film). And speaking of short stories, I hated Tom Hanks’ debut collection so much, I couldn’t finish it.

I recently watched a booktuber list a bunch of books that their commenters recommended. Maybe this is something you might enjoy doing.

I think the best book Curtis Sittenfeld has written is her first book Prep! I know she had a popular book called First Wife that was some sort of like fictionalization of Laura Bush's interior life? Or something like that. Prep is great and her book of short stories. I'd say start there.

Mystic River and Shutter Island were both excellent enough to be made into movies starring Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio.

I’m so surprised you haven’t heard of cutting for stone! Abraham flew to overnight success with that book! I bet your library would have it. It would be a safe way to meet him on the page. It’s beautifully written but is not an easy story. Trauma (what breaks us) & how can we repair what is broken I would say is the main idea of the book.

I’m Birnam Wood curious but gotta have my focus back for it :\

I loved Mystic River. I am interested in Small Mercies specifically because of the year it is set in. I have always wanted to read The Vegetarian. Not a fan of experimental novels. I thought I would be really interested in the list but surprisingly I am not.

None of these jump at me to read. I have read Shutter Island and I really liked it. A good twist to the story I did not see.

I've already read a few from this list, DNFed Pineapple Street and Biography of X - did not like Greek Lessons, so much less meat than The Vegetarian.

Hello Beautiful is good but not amazing. Yellowface is great, but it's literary fiction and not fantasy like her other books (whixh I haven't liked).

Really looking forward to Chain Gang All Stars, it's definitely a risky sounding book, but I'm happy to take that chance on this one.

Hanks has also written several movies (ones you probably love) & quite a bit of music. Multi talented. I didn’t like his short stories because it didn’t feel like I was Reading someone who was writing true to who I knew him to be.
