Freshly Roasted Coffee vs Cacao Beans (Amazon + Local Review)

When I saw them again recently, I told them of my misadventures, and they suggested oven roasting the beans instead, for an easier way to get a perfectly home roasted coffee.

Around that same time, I heard someone talking about replacing their coffee with roasted cacao, and I thought, what better way to compare than to see how home roasted cacao would stack up against home roasted coffee!

In the end, I have to say, I still prefer the coffee. The cacao drink, as I prepared it, was similar to coffee in a lot of ways, but like coffee, I think it's an acquired taste. Definitely doesn't taste like a chocolate bar, let me tell you!

But the experience was a lot of fun, and I think I managed to come up with a decent cup of coffee! Thanks to the guys at CHRC for the suggestions - I highly recommend trying out their products, you can find them online, or sometimes they frequent the Market Collective.

What a great video! Thank you so much for supporting and giving home roasting a try! We agree, looks like a better product the second time around but encourage you to try every method to find your favourite.

It looked like the beans went into second crack as there was surface oil present on the beans. First crack will give you a nice, deep brown colour and no oil. We really enjoyed watching and are excited to share the video with our customers!

Great Job!

That's a spice grinder, not a coffee grinder, which will give you inconsistent grounds. Purchase an actual coffee grinder, where you put beans in the top and coffee grounds come out the bottom.

You should make the cacao in a coffee siphon. That's because cacao has a lot more oil and is more fat soluble than water soluble. The filter you're trying to use is going to result in off flavors, because it will result in channeling, which have over extraction around the channel and under extraction everywhere else. The filter in a coffee siphon eliminates this problem.

Also, this may sound strange, but water may not be the best liquid to use with the cacao, due to having it be so fat soluble, but milk isn't a good idea, because it will scorch at the temperature you need to make coffee. A better idea would be to add milk powder to your ground coffee nibs, ⅓ cup milk powder for every 1 cup water.

Happy brewing!

Fun fact! If you have a coffee machine and are in the mood for a mocha-coffee, simply adding a spoon of hot chocolate mix to your coffee grinds in the filter will ensure that you make a complete and utter mess! 😁

An immersion extraction would work better for the cacao, like how it was done in ancient Mexico. I've also heard that a pressurized extraction would work too, like from a mocha pot.

Excuse me, why are you taking the nutrients out of these beans by burning them out? Also why in God's name would you lay these beans on top of Aluminum?
