Rudy may be gambling that he can talk his way out of this by selling the idea that if he believes what he said, then he couldn't have defamed them. Of course that runs completely counter to his attorneys arguments so far, since they admitted the defamation and have only argued on the amount of damages. The argument of "Don't ruin Giuliani's life" with a huge judgement completely ignores the fact that Rudy ruined the lives of two people with his defamation. They seem to want to argue that the perpetrator should get more consideration than the victims.
