The river is known for its unique history, as it has nurtured various civilisations that resided along the banks of the Volga River. It has been one of the most important waterways since ancient times. The river also played a vital role during the battle of Stalingrad, as it worked as a barrier through which German troops couldn't pass. Many Soviet soldiers died defending the river.
