Introduction
The objective of this manual and training is to provide a good understanding of the fundamentals of Well Control that can be applied to most Well Control operations. In all cases, minimizing the kick volume and closing the well in is our first priority. We have tried, as far as possible, to avoid using specialist terms and iconography.
This manual and training describes industry recognized standards and practices and basic Well Control procedures. They differ from our advanced Well Control methods which tend to be well, formation, or rig specific. The manual covers the guidelines found in API 59 and API 53 along with the International Well Control Forum syllabus.
All Well Control principles rely upon an understanding that good planning and early recognition and close in, is the best form of Well Control. Not all kicks are swabbed kicks, many wells are drilled into unknown formation. It is recognized that equipment can fail despite all the correct procedures being followed. This is why you will find the equipment section comprehensive and useful for general trouble shooting ideas.
About this course
The IWCF DWC level 4 course is for those working in wellsite supervisory roles and for office-based personnel that are primarily involved in the operational decision-making process.
The course builds on the level 3 course content and focuses on more complex aspects of well control and well kill methodology. The course is delivered through interactive lecturing supported by animations, group discussions, desktop exercises and alternated with simulator exercises.
Level 3 and 4 training is a combined class.
Audience
Designed for anyone working in a supervisory role and involved in the well design and operational decision-making process of drilling, such as:
Drilling supervisor
Drilling superintendent
Toolpusher
Rig manager
Drilling contractor
Senior well engineer
Operational well engineer
Certification
Candidates can select either “combined surface and subsea BOP” or “surface BOP” certification. They will take two written exams (principles & procedures and equipment) and will undergo a practical assessment on the simulator and must achieve a minimum score of 70% in each. Level 4 certificates are valid for 2 years.
Online courses
Basra Academy will be using Zoom for the virtual classroom delivery where candidates can ask questions either verbally or use the chat function. Prior to the course, candidates will receive a soft copy of the course manual. Candidates are expected to read the manual and work on questions after class and in the evening.
A maximum of 7 hours per day will be spent on actual virtual lecturing: 3 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon. Simulator familiarisation will be done virtually via a pre-recorded video that will be shared with the candidates. The instructor/assessor will discuss the video in detail with the candidates. Further familiarisation (such as choke handling) will be done when the candidate comes to the centre within the 90-day period.
After completing the online training you will have up to 90 days to take the assessments. Our Basra Academy centers are open for assessments and you just need to contact us to arrange a suitable date and time.
