Luca Lampariello On How To Master Any Language

In this video, I talk about Luca Lampariello's language learning technique. We also touch upon memory skills and language study as an art that goes far beyond the spaced repetition and rote learning advice you usually hear. Although we don't talk much about memory improvement, the use of a Memory Palace or anything even closely related to the Method of Loci, the interview doesn't go by without at least a subtle sense of at least one memory technique at work.

It was a lot of fun interviewing Luca live and in person, but if you want to hear more, please be sure to check out our previous two interviews:

You can also use the link at the very top of this description to visit the Magnetic Memory Method site and download the MP3 and MP4 of the interview if you wish. Enjoy and share with anyone you know who is learning a language!

You are a great interviewer, Anthony.
You listen to a person very carefully and without interrupting him. Also, the questions were great.

I admire Luca and really enjoyed this talk. It's quite informative and useful, actually.

Thanks.

I cracked up laughing around 28:20 - Like Luca, I pretended to speak on my phone to an imaginary friend in Japanese whilst on public transport. One day, my phone actually rang, right in the middle of my "conversation"! Haha! True story :)

Nice conversation! Luca always gives very useful tips. P.S. I'm a native Russian speaker. Luca, if you ever see this comment, it's not "распростра_ённый", but "распростраНённый". Thanks for the great interview!

I just conducted a session of the Summer Language Club with my 7 year old grandchild. We learned Spanish. I am never going to speak even 5 languages, but this tonight was fulfilling!

NOBODY speaks perfect any language unless you dedicate your life completely to study the language...why? Well, I will explain..my mother who was a wise person made me realize this...she was a college graduated and a teacher by vocation...When I was learning English (we speak Spanish, my mother tongue) I will get frustrated and she told me that will take me for ever to learn the new language as many years to learn my mother tongue...she explained..." I am a teacher and yet I cannot debate, argue with the mechanic, I don't speak mechanic...I cannot debate with a doctor, with a lawyer, with a theologies to etc...that's already like speaking other languages...so, unless you are a person with special habilites, really out of the norm and dedicate yourself to study...probably can say that you speak perfect a language

nice and helpful. Just one note, as native speaking Russian I want to say that there is an error (распостраЙОнный) in pronunciation of word распостраНЕнный

You mentioned about a person who is over 50 learning languages. What about people in their 60s and 70s? Do you have any advice for them?

A though on first language acquisition by children. I disagree with Luca about that there is no difference in language acquisition in children and next languages. First language for a child is at the deepest layer of memory comparing to other, that are learnt later. It means that No language affected your mental state as much as your native tongue did.

An hour reading each language is good enough.

@Anthony Metivier
Hello, may be Luca will find this information useful

распространённый
hat prefix рас~ про~
In Russian there is word сторона (side, also mean the direction, as well as far away direction, so the land that is far away will be далекая, чужая сторонка)

In fast speech, part of letters are dissapears so from СТОРОНА we have got a new word СТРАНА (land, country, state)

So now we can return to the word РАС~ПРО~СТРАНËННЫЙ

Russian also has word
СТРАННЫЙ (СТРАН~ный strange, anusual, that has logical explanation, all things from abroad, from other countries can be little bit strange or odd)

So what else do we can find in Russian?
ПРОСТРАННЫЙ (про~СТРАННЫЙ mean extensive, lengthy also vague, like you take information and stretch it side bei side for a long distance :)

So now about рас~про~СТРАН~нëнный

meaning will be widespread, so literally it is something, that has been spread on other side (other side of World, for example, in other couteues and so on)

When you will put all this words and meaning together, then will be more easy understand, and also pronounce, without loosing a letter, like it happened on video, when you repeat word without letter N ( рас~про~стра (Н) ëнный)

Thank you very much for interview, that was so interesting. Learning new languages is always excited and bring us new knowledge. Thank you for sharing you experience. If you will need some help with Russian, you are very welcome 🎉
