Column Method Multiplication Year 4 | The Maths Guy

Column method multiplication in year 4 is an essential element of maths.
Multiplication is one of the 4 main processes of mathematics and arithmetic.
Before you begin it is good to have an understanding of place value, this will help you to arrange you numbers in the correct columns and ready to begin solving the multiplication - in column method.

So where do we begin? We must always start at the smallest value so we begin by multiplying the UNITS, then we move to multiply the UNIT x the TENS and in this example in the video we finish by multiplying the UNIT by the HUNDRED.

There are two ways of recording your results in this example, we can use expanded column method or we can use short method. Which one you choose depends on your experience and understanding.
