Folding Walnut Stepstool...Kind of | Woodworking Builds

Ok so not every projects turn out the way you hope it wood. Here is a project where I was trying to build a not so simple knockdown folding stool for the kitchen. Traditionally form follows function, but in this case...it was travesty. It is like if transformers were battlebots that transformed into ham sandwiches. Form, Function, & Failure, when you fail to reach a compromise.

Anyway, this is a project that I am not proud of, but I learned a lot from. I hope you enjoyed it!

Let me know if you have ever had and issue compromising form following function, or vise versa?

I like how even though it didn't turn out as you thought it would, you confidently shared your experience. We learn more from our failures.

For a new stool, it looks like something from the industrial revolution or somewhere between a museum & a skip. Its strange but for some reason I like it. Well done

Any projects that didn't meet expectations? LOL yes! My wife wanted a try to put the coffee pot on (or is it in, ummm...) and she didn't want to wait for it to be square and flat, I slammed everything together in an hour with pocket holes and she chalked painted it. Now it sits on the buffet and I cant stand looking at it. But other people have liked it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Anyhow, great work keep them coming. Go with your Capri Sun! LOL

First off, ham sandwiches have tons of uses, like choking people to death. Secondly, I like the stool. Thirdly, it looks hot in your shop.

Have you had any projects where you struggled with the balance of form and function?

Design is a challenge for me thats for sure. Drawing it out helps and ultimately as much as I hate it prototype is also valuable ... i.e.: you made this one from lovely walnut and were not happy. Maybe make it out of two by fours or some other inexpensive material first and then you can adjust the designs and make changes cheaper. Good stuff!

I think there is a lot potential with this design. If both legs folded inward followed by the seat ontop of that, you would have something pretty awesome. I may give it a

This stool isn't bad at all. Aside from the pocket holes. Geez, I can't stand pocket hole joinery

Plenty of did it work?If you allow the ends of the front stop (on the step) to extend around and s little to the side of the front legs it would eliminate any chance of the legs moving out while someone is standing on it.My 2-cents
