Also never spar someone that has their significant other in the gym. It is never fun!

You sound like a good coach. I'm not sure why so many trainers get weirded out or ignore injuries like they dont happen. I went to one gym to practice MMA. My very first class they had me sparring a much more skilled opponent and it left me with a permanent knee injury.

I did some boxing rounds with other people from the gym later on and they always went harder than I was comfortable with (and that we agreed to before sparring)

Now I'm very particular about who I'm sparring with and I'm not afraid to take less risks in order to protect my health. Some people say that's pussy shit but I think it's being smart. I'm not trying to go pro, I'm trying to box until I'm 80 (or however long)

It's cool seeing that viewpoint validated by one of the old heads. Cheers

This video should be shared by all boxing community. Specially in spanish... here in Mexico and lots of places in latin america you have a lot of irresponsible coaches and gyms

" Don't spar when your dehydrated " Truth spoken! Gerald McClellan comes to mind. 👍

After I grew up watching Mohammed Ali/Cassius Clay spar and fight for years on tv and seeing the condition he was in when he was older it made me pause and think about long term damage you can receive while boxing. This is good content professor!

I’m glad you brought up the sibling rivalry, I used to box against my two older brothers and it used to get very ugly to a point that we had to go to seperate gyms... We all joined the Military and we have always been super competitive and even to this day I can only have a relationship with one of them .. Now I have three sons and there is no way I’d let them spar each other, they can hold the focus mitts for one another and work together not against. Thank you for sharing all your experiences and thoughts on this subject Sir . God Bless

Protect yourself at all times. When I was about sixteen I got hit hard on the left side of my head above the ear. When people are amused at a fighter struggling to get to his feet on rubber bands, I think to myself, "you've never been there have you"?
Paul, do you ever listen to Carlos Gardel? He's magnificent.

Just found out that Paulie passed. This video nearly brought tears to my eyes. Aside from the invaluable, and even life-saving, information Paul provided here you can see just how much he cared bout people. I had a very brief career in the sport and worked in gyms where the trainers were not nearly as protective as Paul. He is right on the money about all he says here. When he said he never allowed a guy in the ring with one of his guys without knowing who he was and would not allow brothers to spar I got chills. This was the type of man you send your son to for training and life lessons. RIP Paul, ....never be another like you.

Unless someone is willing to do touch sparring or 80% power to the body/10% to the head sparring with me I just wont bother. Their ego doesnt concern me, the health of my brain does.

This wisdom seems like mere common sense, but is so critical. Thanks for reminding the young fighters about these lessons. The stakes are not some purse or pride, but one's life.

Remember a hurt martial artist can’t practice, and that hurts everyone.

It's easy to forget that the person your training with is preparing themselves for an actual necessary engagement, to be able to survive it. They don't need you kicking thier head off to get there. Be kind to one another, and learn together

Punch doctor, I know you’re exactly correct even though I don’t fight.

I come from a totally different sport - track. I love listening to coaches and athletes from other sports talk about concepts because there’s a lot of crossover, even between boxing and track.

You say that you never spar brothers, and I’ve seen that on the track with a pair of twin sisters. Whenever one would beat the other in a race there’d be tears, and on easy sessions they’d push each other too hard trying to beat the other twin, completely throwing out the purpose of the session. Last year twin 1 started winning constantly, and twin 2 quit the sport. Both were talented and neither should have quit.

You’re also exactly correct about new people to the group or people from outside the group. Whenever we get a new athlete or have one from another squad train with us, we run the reps harder than normal. This is fine for an all out session, but if it’s an easy session or a session where we have to hold a slower pace to get the correct benefit, it can be detrimental.

Just like too many hard boxing sessions shorten a boxer’s career and impacts their health, so do too many difficult sessions for a runner, albeit in a less serious way.

You’ve given me lots to think about as a future coach and current athlete.

Well said. A friend of mine was just telling me this weekend his kid is doing kickboxing and really liking it. I love martial arts so think that’s great but will send him this in case his boy stays on this path.
