About:
This 1965 recording of Chuck Berry from the Sonuma archives starts off calmly enough. We open onto a circular stage with the audience sitting around the edges. There are no frills in the camera work, which is static and prosaic. The compére introduces Berry with minimal gusto and a plumb in his throat. The audience claps politely.

But soon enough, once Berry appears, it becomes clear that his natural energy is enough to break through all formalities, changing the dynamic of the room and ridding it of any semblance of stuffiness. Because of that, as 21st century viewers, it still feels fresh.

Berry is a born entertainer, and his audience engagement is second to none. In between rolling out classic after classic, he teaches the crowd the proper way of pronouncing “blues,” a word that should be “said with both lips,” one that contains sorrow, hardship, and authenticity.
