He does actually show other emotions if you raise his affinity. In addition to respecting you, he starts to show a dark humor and enjoys working with you rather than just following an order.

Honestly, missed opportunity for a hidden quest. Imagine it, He gets sick and tired of you, and you raise that he's not acting as a machine should, and that he serves you, not the institute. He threatens that he'll appeal to the rest of the institute that you're working against them. You demand his reset code, and tell him that he will be scrapped for parts. He starts getting nervous, and tries reasoning with you to just try to work with the institute again if he continues as your companion. If you point out that he shouldn't be panicking over being disassembled, he panics, and flees the institute.
Some time later, you encounter him at the Railroad HQ, or Bunker Hill. He comes clean and tells you that he's not acting like a machine should, and realized what other runaway synths feel. You then offer the chance to be your companion again (with a hard speech check), and he can rejoin you as a companion (starts at the lowest affinity score), and will not be aligned to any faction (Since he's now a traitor to the Institute).

X6 creeped me out and i hated every minute i spent travelling with him. As soon as i reached max affinity i sent him back to the institute then jumped on the brotherhood vertibird to mass fusion
