The Wizard Of Oz(1939) If I Only Had A Heart.
Buddy Ebsen was originally cast, but due to allergic reaction from the aluminum powder makeup, Ebsen was replaced by Jack Haley.
Lyrics:
When a man's an empty kettle
He should be on his mettle
And yet I'm torn apart
Just because I'm presumin'
That I could be kinda human
If I only had a heart

I'd be tender, I'd be gentle
And awful sentimental
Regarding love and art
I'd be friends with the sparrows
And the boy that shoots the arrows
If I only had a heart

Picture me a balcony
Above a voice sings low
Wherefore art thou, Romeo?
I hear a beat, how sweet!
Just to register emotion, jealousy, devotion
And really feel the part
I could stay young and chipper
And I'd lock it with a zipper
If I only had a heart

Fun Fact: The lady who sang the line "wherefore art thou, Romeo?" is Adriana Caselotti, the voice of Snow White in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). She was also paid $1000 for her only line in the film.

You know what I love even more than "If I Only Had A Heart" song in this scene? Lovely Toto watching and interacting with Tin Man, he immediately connects with him. Toto really enjoy this adventure throughout the entire film. ❤🐕

No one else can sing this song like he can, I've seen many people sing this but only Jack Haley had the right voice for this song

The Tin Man was my favorite character. He already had a heart, but he just didn’t know that he had a heart. I absolutely love this scene. I did this dance for my wife one night, she videoed it, and she absolutely loved it.

In high school I tried to play the tin man as true to the movie as possible watching this scene on loop for months. I was even determined to get the facial expressions right.

Jack Haley grew up in Boston. This is reflected in his accent here - “No haht”

His facial expressions ! My goodness they are spot on perfect in the scene to convey such warmth and sincerity . No way anyone but Jack could pull off that performance. He had Judy glowing.

This is so beautiful. He has a lot of heart despite his lack of it, and others have no heart despite of it beating in theyr chest

1:02-1:05 Adriana Caselotti's last few second-long role in a major movie after playing Snow White. Walt Disney wouldn't let her get away with anything else

I've been an empty kettle for a while now, and I'm rarely on my mettle. This song holds true
