Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets | Trailer

On the eve of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and on its final night before closing, a Las Vegas dive bar becomes a stage where its employees and barflies commiserate one last time. Filmmaking brothers Bill and Turner Ross train their keenly observed quasi-fiction on the lived-in atmosphere of a haunt, whose massed warmth and love conceal its patron’s worries—at least for a little while. Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets is a carefully constructed yet oddly affecting record of an American sensibility at once straining to survive and ready for the end. A Utopia release.

Finally got around to watching the Blu ray on New Years. Needless to say, it’s become a yearly New Years tradition for me. Even tho it has nothing do with New Years 😆

I've worked in bars like this. Everyone has a good time but also looks out for each other, and there's a local folklore that goes back years and years that's still talked about. When they close it's like a community disappearing.

Reminds me of the Jury Room in Santa Cruz, CA. I grew up in the bar considering my Dad was a regular and brought me there all the time because he had nobody to take care of me. Then I grew into being my own alcoholic by the age of 21 and was a frequent flyer. Regardless it was a good crew of regulars and we were a big dysfunctional family. Unfortunately/fortunately I've been sober for the last 16 years, but boy is it hard not to reminisce about them.

Idk exactly what the point is of the movie, but it sure did show almost every emotion humanly possible. Very relatable, and could get really overwhelming with the sounds all at once. It almost makes you feel as if you're there with them. Amazing film, amazing an acquired taste like some would say. 🤷🏽‍♂️

This reminds me of the Nathan for You episode where he did the “play” called Smokers Allowed.

this little clip kind of reminds me of Eagle Pennell's LAST NIGHT AT THE ALAMO which Linklater helped restore a few years ago.

Was curious but reading that this was actually filmed and cast in New Orleans makes it an unfortunate no for me. I lived in Vegas for 20 years, and spent the better part of a decade in and around bars and crowds like this. While I see plenty of similarities here and appreciate them, I’d have respected more if the filmmakers staked out and filmed at The Huntridge Tavern, The Rusty Spur, Champagne’s, Island Bar and Grill, or any number of real Vegas dive bars populated by people surviving in a 24/7 town that encourages your every vice and won’t ever stop you from wrecking your life through them, because it’s how it sustains itself. Otherwise, I recognize a lot here from experience.

Still haven't made my mind up over this movie. It's 40 minutes too long, I know that. It seems too inauthentic, people just ain't that kind to each other. There's one woman who is literally an extra, says or does nothing. She's a fish outta water in that place. Michael Martin is the only one with any point. Also there's no money transactions, were the drinks all free? Sorry to be a downer but it's a no from me.

This movie absolutely sucked, nobody who’s sober likes hanging out with drunks and the directors were insufferable pricks at True/False. This film was a craptastic gimmick that failed but the gatekeepers kept it alive.
