I think this vid was influential in me ordering a stereo set of KM 183s. Thanks for putting this up.

The subtlety is incredible. I think it's obvious the 183's are the best on this source, but with all things considered, the NT5's are unbelievable at their price point. But yeah, to me the NT5's sound a little sweeter than the 184's, which I was defo not expecting! Thanks for the review

I have the NT5 pairs and LOVE them over the KM184s for concert settings on my flamenco guitar. Another mic worth mentioning is the Sennheiser e 614 super-cardioid. All the venue's I play usually have the KM184s standard but the NT5 and e614s are had to beat. Its not always about name and price ;) Sennheiser also owns Neumann.

Beautiful playing, that's why all sound good.

The NT5 sounds incredible - in this case i like them more than the KM184, more even, no/less extra-sparkle in the highs

This I did not expect: While the Neumans are very nice, I think the NT-5's are just a touch better!

Both are nice. Can you do a comparison with the mics 4-5 feet away from the piano, such as for classical music? I think we would hear any difference better than close mic'ing.

Great comparison, great playing. I discover a very high value for my NT5. Rode have great product in catalogue.
What is the recording chain for this comparison?
Thanks

All great microphones, and for acoustic and instrumental instruments especially piano (and stringed instruments) should utilize omnidirectional microphones in general, like the KM183. Have you heard of the sE8 Omnis? They would also make extremely great contenders.

Personally I feel the 184 sounds the best at close position, with fuller and smoother tone. The NT55 was a bit unnatural, tone was on the thinner side. The 183 would be the best choice if only using one pair to record.

Prefer the KM183 omni - warmer, smoother - 183 sounded like a finished record - would be much easier to get a good recording with them compared to the cardioids.

Don't forget that there are OMNI capsules available for the NT-5. This makes them a great value.

(Also, check out Keith Jarrett playing this song, Danny Boy, and prepare yourself for a sublime experience.)

NT5s listening on headphones are amazing.

Would the pair of NT5s work well in a live situation. Let’s say u wanted to mic a grand piano at a loud church. Would it still sound good?!

Personally I couldn't hear any difference between nt5 and km 184, but km 183 won the first prize.

Definitely the omnis!!! The cardioids sound too harsh and bright!

Hi! Where can I find the mic stands that are in your video? Regards

The 183s win by a mile - and it's all down to the omnidirectional pattern. Instantly it sounds like an instrument in a real space. Wider, fuller and vastly superior.
