ABOUT US:
Mormon Stories Podcast is the longest-running and most successful podcast in Mormonism - hosted by Dr. John Dehlin. At Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We also occasionally interview scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1) Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology, 2) Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis, and 3) Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions.

Mormon Stories Podcast is a product of the Open Stories Foundation - a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting Mormons in religious transition.

$8000 is a TON of money, especially when you're on food stamps and have kids. But it's a big chunk for even the average middle class family, I would say. Tithing is such a shitty thing. I think it should be volunteer, like a fast offering, rather than required for a temple recommend. I never realized how messed up that is until I got out.

Not Mormon but tithing is one of the main things that made me walk away from my religion. I remember my pastor berating people during a sermon for not "putting God first" and tithing every Sunday, saying that they needed to have faith God would make sure their bills were paid. This was in 3rd ward Houston, one of the poorest neighborhoods, and he drove a $100k Mercedes. He also accepted "love offerings" from the congregation.

I feel this. My mother raised 13 kids in a blended family. I remember her looking so defeated when she finally realized they could no longer pay tithing to the church. Because it was either feed the kids or pay tithing. And soon after, they took her temple recommend away. I had never seen her so down when she told me. And that was the day that I realized how rotten the church is. I never went back. Mom has been gone for 10 years now. She was a really good woman who gave and gave of herself and never got much in return.

When my family was really struggling my dad still tithed his unemployment check. All while we were getting food from another churches food bank bc the church we went do didn’t have that. When we had no electricity or water they still tithed. It’s such a scam.

Ex Mormon here - my family grew up very poor and often couldn't afford food. My parents couldn't afford to pay tithing because it would mean we'd be homeless. I recall the church giving my parents a pass on tithing and then helping us out weekly with groceries from the bishop's storehouse. In exchange for food and essentials, my mom and I would volunteer at the church's canning facility every now and then which amounted to very little time in exchange for food. I may not be Mormon anymore due to various reasons, but I'm grateful to whoever arranged for us to have food through the church. The Mormon church has many faults and downfalls, but I can't sit here and say it's all bad because somehow they fed my sisters, my parents and myself for most of my childhood. I think a lot of the good and evil we encounter in modern mormonism comes down to whoever was in charge of the ward at the time.

My sister died, she fell on her 30 degree floor and just laid there. She had no money for heat, she’d given it all to tithing. I am not a Mormon follower but at the Mormon funeral in a circle with the men I commented that my sister will finally reach the highest points of heaven as she had been baptized for the dead hundreds of times and was temple ready, wore her garments diligently. Her bishop said or no sister —— would never reach the highest level of heaven because she was with out a man at 59. I was just stunned beyond belief at what that woman gave to the church and went with out to pay that tithing. Greedy sons of bitches is all I can say, it just disgusted me.

This hits me deep. My cousin's all are very devout and I've secretly had to help so many get on WIC, EBT, Medicaid... Etc for their growing families while their husbands were in school... But my Uncle would be going around sharing his testimony about how all 11 of his kids graduated from BYU w/ bachelor's (plus more) with no debt and no "handouts" never missing their tithe. SMH

Man, this makes me sick to my stomach. They literally tell you that their income is more important than your kids health, that's so evil

Choosing to pay tithing only to suffer has to be the biggest slap in the face to our ancestors.

Last Christmas season I had returned to going to church bc my divorce had just been finalized and I needed some something that I thought I'd find at the church. They started hounding me about tithing. I told them I was unemployed and 10% of 0 is still nothing. I got told that I still had to pay and to meet with the bishop. I told them no and just never went back. I had just become a single mom of 4 struggling to get by and they were just wanting money.

If a rich man claims to hear the voice of God, he is respected and revered.
If a poor man claims to hear the voice of God, he is called schizophrenic and institutionalized.

I was always annoyed listening to comfortably-wealthy members encourage tithing like it wasn’t an issue at all. Like they couldn’t fathom why anyone would question paying tithing. Then tell a ridiculous miracle story about finding $200 dollars in their laundry after paying tithing.
