A one on one fight was doomed to failure, but the CSA didn't want a one on one fight. Their strategy was to secure international recognition and allies. Had they managed to get just one decisive victory while on the offensive (or if the Trent affair had escalated), England and France would have intervened and crushed the federals. From that point, Yankeedom is torn between a reconciliation party with good economics, and warmongers whose ideas would cause stagnation. Either way, the south is safe.

Slavery was not in any imminent danger from the Republican party. They were perfectly willing to keep slavery up until a few years into the war when they decided to free slaves in southern controlled territory to weaken and punish the CSA.
