If you think NYC Otaku Heaven now, you should have seen it about 10 - 12 years ago. There was a shopping center in Chinatown that had a basement floor full of nothing but otaku goods. Models kits, figures, DVDs, wall scrolls, you name it, they had it. There were others shops in Chinatown as well, among them MUGEN TOYS was the absolute best.
Book-Off is another decent place that's still around, but the inventory and pricing was so much better back then.
Man, those were the days.
