Amtrak Adventures from Charleston to Newark NJ

My Southern journey from Charleston, SC to Newark, NJ on Amtrak was definitely an adventure filled with diverse landscapes and a taste of American history.

My Starting Point: Charleston, SC
Charleston is known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. As you prepare to depart, you might explore some of its famous sites such as the beach. I love the beach.

The Amtrak Experience
I boarded an Amtrak train at Charleston’s North Charleston Station. The Silver Meteor and Silver Star lines serve this route, offering a comfortable and scenic journey up the Eastern Seaboard.

Onboard Amenities:
Seating: Spacious seats with ample legroom, or you might choose a sleeper car for overnight comfort.
Cafe Car: Offering meals with a view, featuring regional specialties.

The train travels through picturesque lowcountry, with views of swamps, forests, and small towns.
As you head north, you’ll pass through cities like Florence and Fayetteville.
Virginia:

Enjoy the lush landscapes and historic sites, especially around Richmond and Alexandria.

The route takes you through the countryside and small towns.
Passing through Baltimore, you’ll see a mix of industrial areas and historical neighborhoods.
Pennsylvania:
Then fianlly my hometown Newark NJ
Newark Offers tond of adventure and places to visit. Here are a few.

From one Gator Navy Vet to another, I tell you that you will enjoy the hell out of your journey across the country on Amtrak. My advice to you is to get yourself a sleeper accommodation. And make sure you have a travel companion, the more people on the reservation, the cheaper it would be per person traveling. The food is much much better on the trains leaving out of Chicago going west. And with sleeper reservation, the food is included in your ticket prices. Fun times when traveling on the train when i was young, we always packed a lunch, from ny to nc and georgia, glad you experienced amtrak, cross country, i went from ny to california to my cuz wedding, nice scenic views of the mountains in 3 days, the food was just ok😁

I’m taking the Amtrak next week to go to Virginia for my Family Reunion. I usually take food with me . The hospitality on the train is quite nice though, I’ll give them that 💯

That's crazy $6 for a grilled cheese sandwich that wasn't very good. I'd ride on an Amtrak train instead of an airplane now and I flew in an airplane in the late 80's to California in 1988 and back from 1988 to '90 and I went to Nashville from Ohio a couple of times in 1998 and 2001 too.

You did pretty good. Amtrak was only about an hour late getting into Newark.
I try to never get food on the train. Bring your own -- energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, peanut butter cracker packs, water, etc. Only thing I would get on the train is a can of soda or a bottle of water.

I think the amtrak burgers aren’t bad. The nice thing is you can bring on pretty much anything, so you can pack a cooler with extra food. If you get a roomette you can even have some adult beverages of your own.
