Bernie Sanders unveils bill to cancel all Americans student loan debt

Sen. Bernie Sanders announced a plan on Monday to erase the country's $1.6 trillion outstanding student debt. The legislation will release all 45 million Americans from their student debt and be paid for with a new tax on Wall Street transactions. The plan would also make two- and four-year public colleges and universities tuition- and debt-free.

I heard this question from someone else. Free college? Okay. What about those that have already paid to have their children go to college or those that paid their own way through college? Will they be reimbursed the money they paid? It's a valid question and point.

I joined the service after high school, started at a community college, and worked full-time through my undergrad. I now have two bachelor's degrees and I'm going to Grad school next Spring. I owe 0 dollars. Why are you rewarding the irresponsible?

#1 Cancel out the debt, still have to pay for it at tax debt is considered INCOME. Please stipulate that in the bill.

I don’t quite agree with this. First of all, you do not need a college degree to succeed. Second, does this mean that students who chose private universities will also be forgiven? Wouldn’t that be unfair to those who attended community college?

People will keep asking "but how will you PAY for this?" no matter how many f'n times he explains it. And news anchors will keep pretending like he never explained it, or it's not available in perfect detail on his website. Thing is, he's selling himself short by only laying out the direct cost payment via Wall Street tax money--that says NOTHING about the boom to the economy that will occur when 45 million of us are unshackled from this disabling debt. My god, if he actually gets this done, I could actually become a homeowner. I'm 45 and at this point it looks like I will die in college debt, and never purchase a home. Just think of all the houses across the country that will be bought, all the ones that will need to be built, never mind all the cars, refrigerators, vacations, ETC. ETC ETC that people will be able to afford. You know, like our Grandparents could do.

So What I just figured out that I think we are all missing and what boggles my mind though Is 🤔 if B.S. could really forgive ALL OUR college debt That really won't happen because when we go into our working life, we will actually be paying ALL OF OUR WORKING LIFE FOR ALL who come after us. So their college debt Will be our collective college debt FOREVER!!! 😥 Now I'm beginning to understand what the Boomers are yelling about. I think I'd rather just pay mine off, Keep control of my money and get my one debt over with! Wall street nice idea probably won't ever happen. 😥

The old saying is you never get something for nothing, Bernie can't cash in on all this free stuff. Someone is gonna have to pay for this stuff, you cannot tax people who make Wall Street transactions

If college is to be free, this country better start working at reducing the cost of college. And shifting to an education that will better prepare students for the workplace. I came back to this comment to say that this is a "debt jubilee". Where the government forgives debt private citizens owe to the government. It may be one of many. My fear is that the result is a reduction in the purchasing power of the dollar.
