In all honesty, Steve was kind of an Ass in season 1, till like the last episode.
But MANN he had an awesome character arc from then on. He is the designated protector for the kids, and he will risk getting beat up to keep them safe. He deserves happiness, even if its not with Nancy, he just deserves it. He's grown so much since the 1st season. I hope for the best for him.

A lot of people say they feel bad for Jonathan getting a raw deal from Nancy and Steve rekindling their suppressed feelings for each other, but the way I see it Jonathan had more of a stalker crush vibe towards Nancy where he mostly was drawn to her for her beauty and appeal, whereas Steve's love for her is more skin deep. I always thought that Nancy and Jonathan were brought together more out of circumstance rather than having a strong romantic connection. And I feel like Nancy pities Jonathan more than she actually loves him, while Jonathan also self pities himself as he feels she's out of his league. While Steve on the other hand is also prone to self loathing, he doesn't see Nancy as a prize to win or satisfy but someone he enjoys being with and pines for despite everything that's happened between them.

They’ve been hinting so much about Steve and Nancy getting back together in season 4 that I really doubt the writers are gonna kill either one of them.
