Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991. From then until the Revolution of Dignity in 2014 it existed as a neo-Soviet country more or less, still dominated by its communist past. President Poroshenko (2014-2019) adopted the popular movement to remove Lenin monuments, known as the Leninopad - falling Lenins, making an official de-communization policy to also remove thousands of Marxist street and place names and other communist monuments.
This reform process has not yet taken place in Russia or Belarus by 2025, which are still neo-Soviet countries, and this was the reason for the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 by Putin, who has been trying to hold on to power and the inadequate Soviet past, which is not well suited for Russia either - or any country, benefitting only a small clique at the expense of the rest of the population and their country's future, which it undermines.

Ukrainian Independence Day is officially on the 24th of August, but it was celebrated on the previous Saturday-Ingvisday in Etobicoke (GTA), in Centennial Park. It was a well-attended large event which went all afternoon , with some special guest performers from Ukraine. This is part 1 of 2 of the full event on the main stage, with the speeches, but missing the parade of performers at the very beginning. Later there was an evening dance called a Zabava with a live band. There was also large food and vendors' area which isn't shown in the video, and some soccer matches in the field nearby.
The event is organized by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) Toronto Branch.
