The European Union voted on Friday to pave the way for tariffs of up to 35.3% on electric vehicles imported from China, a move that might set the stage for a protracted trade war with the Asian giant. The vote comes after a year-long anti-subsidy investigation by the European Commission, which proposed the tariffs to counter what it sees as unfair Chinese subsidies.

It's called "incentives" here, and "illegal subsidies" in other countries.

It’s called “high productivity” here, and “overcapacity” there.

Very bad for an average person! This is only going to hurt ordinary people as we won’t have access to affordable good quality cars.

Germany has the most to lose in China. They depend on China for their growth and have for years. They secretly might like the tariffs. But must go on the record against them, as to not anger their largest market.

Finally, Beijing has an excuse to impose tariffs on imported cars over 2, 500 cc, most of which come from the EU. They can claim it's for environmental reasons.

it is a indicator of incompetence, weakness and lack of confidence and strategy.. everyone knows that tariff is like morphine, it reliefs the pain temporarily but will do permanent damage in long term….

This is not an attack on China. It's an attack on the working class. BYD makes a better more affordable car. Making up imaginary words like "over production" won't change this.

France, Ireland, Poland, Italy, Netherlands, your brandy, pork, diary, sport car etc markets in China are toast. As for the 3 chihuahua Baltic states, they aren't significant to be given the dignity of a retaliation. There are more countries that didn't vote for this so this is just more politics than economics by member nations that agreed to it.

So instead of making the European industry more competitive, they are punishing the EU customers. The EU taxpayers are being excessively squeezes by overregulation and overtaxation, with no bright future in the horizon.

Getting China has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over measures imposed by the European Union (EU) on electric vehicles (EVs) made in the Asian country.

The EU has finalized a decision to impose tariffs ranging from 8% to 35% on Chinese EV imports for a period of five years. The ruling last week concluded a year-long investigation by Brussels, claiming that China benefits from unfair subsidization. The new levies will be imposed in addition to the EU’s standard 10% import duty on cars.

Don't worry. In the UK ordinary people can't afford EV's, we're buying combustion engine cars.
