I'm surprised he wasn't given the dreaded "When you have a moment, I have a phone number for you to write down" after he aborted his takeoff roll.

Legend says that to this day the captain still thinks he was on the runway

My favorite part: "...would you like to taxi back to the RUNWAY to try it again?". ATC has a sense of humor :)

Harrison Ford doesn’t have to feel so bad now, it evens happens to large airline pilots.

I did like the ATC man for simply asking "do you want to try again" (as if it was to a young child that learns to ride a bicycle or something) - and not making a fuss about it there and then.
I am sure, in the end (though not initially) everybody understood this simple (yet dangerous) error and there was no use for additional stress - any incident investigation notwithstanding.

... and I do hope this was investigated further. Not in order to determine who was responsible (as this is 100% sure) but how to possible help prevent this from happening again. Human error is just a frequent companion and aviation is the best industry as regards learning from itself, bar none.
We can laugh at the captain (in hindsight) but it is even more important to help reduce the number of errors - maybe with even better TWY and RWY markings and electronic assistance in the cockpit plus procedures to use it.

And this is why at London Gatwick, Turkish Airlines had to have mandatory follow-me vehicles from the moment they arrived to the moment they departed for several years.

The controller was super cool, didn’t sound worried at all.

The captain allegedly announced they had rejected takeoff for a mechanical problem.

What a pro! To remain so perfectly calm. I might have started screaming.

Some commercial aviation pilots tries to land on a taxiway, some tries to take off. What's wrong with all them? Did they get any training? Did they execute any checklists or checklists are optional for them?

Very fortunate that Air Canada wasn't landing then.

If they had continued the takeoff, would they have been able to take off safely ? What are the repercussions from this for the pilot? Thank you.

How can the pilots not tell between the runway and the taxiway ?! This is absolutely unbelievable !

So the absence of piano keys, runway numbers and touchdown markers wasn't enough to alert this pilot that he was not on a runway?

Mmm..some time ago, an airbus from another company made the same mistake in the same runway... Perhaps its time to check what can be done with señalization...or place an advisory to that specific point..

Superbly managed by the controller ☆☆☆☆☆

2 (!) People in the cockpit didn't see the runway markings, and they continued anyway. Amazing.

What about the amount of fuel that was consumed on the attempt to take off and the holding? Does that need to be replenished?
