Asteroid that NASA redirected will pass Earth this weekend

This footage, shared by NASA in September 2022, shows the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) which purposefully impacted an asteroid in order to move it. It was the first mission in the world to trial technology that would protect Earth from potential asteroid collisions.

Dimorphos, the massive asteroid that the NASA deliberately crashed a spacecraft into in this clip, is one of five asteroids due to pass by Earth over the weekend, the space agency said.

NASA’s Asteroid Watch dashboard, which tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth, lists five asteroids that are expected to approach between June 23 and 25. One is the size of a bus, three are comparable in size to planes, and the largest, Dimorphos, is the size of a stadium. #shorts

The "re- direction " wasn't to avoid a terrestrial collision. It was the first (important) test of the capability of doing so.

And 1, 000 years from now it bumps into the other asteroids its been missing the last half a million years sending them directly at the Earth.

This title is very disingenuous. It strongly implies that the redirected asteroid has become a threat as a result of the test performed on it. In actuality, the asteroid (Dimorphos) is a satellite of another asteroid (Didymos) which means that unless it gets flinged out of its orbit around Didymos, there's exactly zero chance of it becoming a threat to us. What's even more hilarious, the title isn't even a little correct about the binary asteroid's approach. Yes, Didymos-Dimorphos does have periodic, relatively close encounters with Earth (5-30 million km) but they are by no means dengerous and the next one is calculated in October 2062. Currently it's around 360 million km away from us, which is more than twice as far away as the Sun is.

Headlines and statements like this one spread by established media outlets is one of the big reasons why so many people don't trust specialists and resort to their own "common sense" and "teachings" of various charlatans.

A really big asteroid might be just what Earth needs to get rid of a certain…troublesome species.

Just a quick reminder, this smells like fish after about three days in the sun.

We need to make a machine to shoot strong lasers far out into space at a certain distance to destroy these asteroids before it gets to Earth.
