Sometimes, companies post a job - even though they've already identified someone internally for the role 👀

It might seem like a waste of everyone’s time, and sometimes it can be (like in this scenario) - but, when done right, the company is actually looking for an external candidate who may be better suited for the role.

These policies *should* exist to ensure the best candidate is hired, not just as a box to be checked. ✅

Remember, if you’re looking for a job, you can only focus on what’s in your control - so tailor your applications and your resume to each position you apply to, nail your interview, and keep applying. You got this!

Thank you for this message! I felt so demoralized when you put so much time and energy into interview process (including attached assignments) only to find out they had an internal candidate in place. One time, the internal candidate had already technically started the exact position before my interview process had even begun that month. They knew they weren't hiring anyone but him. I spent weeks and a lot of work on that interview process. They're just wasting people's time and hard work.

Thank you for creating this video from my request! It is very frustrating, and I’m not sure if there’s a better solution. Unfortunately, it seems most companies do post “just because” 😕

ahgr...I hate to admit it but I am one of those guys who got directly hired from a non-existent pool. Although I was the chosen one, the company still had to place the ad. But in my defense, I have not disappointed and everyone sees I enjoy what I'm doing.

As long as HR departments propagate policies that are out of touch with the logical and reasonable needs of the organization, applicants need to be able to detect and filter "filled" postings.

One of the most obvious ways to do this is to politely reach out to the hiring manager, or perhaps someone already in the organization and directly ask if there are strong internal applicants already identified for the position.

Also, look to see if the organization is hiring multiple people. Often for a one-off position, they know who they want.

Lastly, look at the duration of the application window and compare it to other jobs posted at that company. If the posting deadline is a short period, or over a holiday, etc., there's a good chance they're hoping to minimize the number of applicants they receive.

But ultimately, like any job search, do your research and network your way to getting the inside scoop.

If they have an opening, and they are moving an employee into that opening, they still have an opening. They should post that job instead.

That’s why connections are your friend 😬

So the company is bad if they don't hire people from outside organization because they are biased. But if they hire someone new instead of giving promotions to people who already work in the project for years the company is bad for not giving opportunities to grow. Can't win
